An old stump is a trip hazard, a mowing obstacle and a home for insects. Stump grinding chews the stump and the main roots down below the surface so you can lay sod, plant, or put in a patio.

How stump grinding works
A grinding machine with a spinning cutting wheel works across the stump until it’s below grade. The result is a pile of wood chips that can be used as mulch or hauled away. Smaller walk-behind machines fit through most backyard gates.
What affects the price
- Stump diameter, usually the biggest factor
- How many stumps you have (several at once usually costs less per stump)
- Access: gates, slopes, fences and how far the machine has to travel
- Whether you want the chips hauled away and the hole filled with topsoil
Before grinding: underground utility lines should be marked. In Massachusetts, call 811 (Dig Safe) a few days before any digging-type work.
